Review

Well, you didn’t ask for it but you got it anyway.

After countless parodies and unreported ear-gougings due to her previous song, “Friday,” Rebecca Black has released a new song, called “My Moment.” And let me tell you something…

It. Is. Average.

Well, actually, scratch that. I have mixed feelings about it, just like I have mixed feelings about a reference to “The Wire” in an episode of “iCarly,” and the sentiments are exactly the same.

On the one hand, there’s the superficial level. I’ll admit that the song is catchy, but my last listen-through was an hour ago and if someone bet my life that I could sing the chorus without hearing it again, I’d be on the wrong end of the business. Or the business end of…something. My point being, that based on nothing more than the song itself, kids and tweens will love it. It’s overproduced, synthesized, overly optimistic bubble-gum pop.

Listen: Rebecca Black – My Moment

However, there’s something to be said for the adult audience that listens to the song. The collective psyche of the Internet is begging for another failure. It’s almost hinging on it. “Friday” and its friendly reminder of the order of the days in the week are still feeding grounds for trolls. Since it’s not the giant meltdown that everyone – alright, myself included – were asking for, it’s not going to do as well.

So, what does this mean for Ms. Black? Is her “Moment” up? Or is there something else on the horizon? Well, one thing is true –

she’s not a bad singer, at all.

She just chooses mediocre, poorly written songs. And in this age of oversaturation, where almost everything popular in the music business has to be drained of almost everything organic, her natural talent is being overshadowed by auto-tune.

I could continue with a scathing critique of everyone from Justin Bieber to Ke$ha, but I’m not here to do that. What I am here to do is say that Ms. Black, your legacy is set. Congratulations. Quit while you’re ahead, please.

Just because we’re here for “Friday” doesn’t mean we’ll be here when the weekend’s over.
